¡Llegó el verano! Summer is here!
Just because summer break is around the corner, that doesn’t mean we need to put our Spanish language learning on hold!
If you’re looking for a way to celebrate the summer season and practice Spanish at the same time, a beach camping Spanish lesson will fit the bill.
At Llamitas Spanish, we teach Spanish through cross-curricular, thematic units—these incorporate the core subjects in Spanish, including phonics, literacy, math, cultural studies, music, and more.
We believe this is the ideal way for kids to learn a new language, because it gives them the opportunity to apply their language skills to different contexts.
Aside from our individual curriculum levels, we also offer a Spanish Holiday and Seasonal bundle, which includes a unit all about El verano—summer!
There, you’ll find camping and beach vocabulary perfect for beach camping Spanish lessons. Today, we’re sharing some of these terms with you, plus fun activities to get you started!

Fun Beach Camping Activity Ideas to Practice Spanish
At Llamitas Spanish, we love thematic learning, and there are so many fun ways to practice Spanish with a beach camping theme. Your kids will enjoy using their imaginations with these games and activities, which bring the beach and campground right to you.
Try out some of these Spanish beach camping activities to enrich your lesson:
Vocabulary Scavenger Hunt
Make a scavenger hunt with vocabulary words—for example, rocas (rocks), mesa (table), arena (sand)—and go for a walk at a nearby park or beach.
Or, stay home and hide vocabulary word cards around the room for your kids to find. Then, have them match the words to picture cards or use the word in a sentence, depending on their level.
Cuentos de fogata (Campfire Stories)
Set up a pretend campfire with sticks, paper flames, or anything else you have on hand.
Sit around the “fire” in a circle and use vocabulary flashcards to come up with silly stories together. Flip over a handful of word cards at once and see how you can connect them into one silly story. Begin with “Érase una vez…” (“Once upon a time…”).
Camp Out (or Camp In)
Use items around the house or in your yard for a pretend campout.
Make a check-list with Spanish camping vocabulary to “pack” for your camping trip and set up the campsite: tienda de campaña (tent), saco de dormir (sleeping bag), lámpara (lamp).
Here are a few other ways to make it fun: If you’re staying indoors, use blankets or a play tent and bring out the stuffed animals and pretend they’re wild animals—practice animal names in Spanish.
Turn off the lights and read Spanish picture books by lantern light. If you’re outside, gather sticks for a pretend campfire and eat marshmallows.
La playa Sensory Bin
Making your own beach-themed sensory bin is a great idea for younger learners.
Fill a tub with sand and small beach items (toys or pictures work great for this). Have your kids name each item in Spanish as they find them. Once they’ve found the hidden items, let them enjoy some free play with the sensory bin.
Beach Day at Home
Bring your beach chairs and towels to the backyard and set up a kiddie pool and sandbox (or a small tub of sand if you don’t have one).
Make a packing list in Spanish of the items you’ll need for your kids to help find. While playing in the sand and water, practice Spanish verbs: for example, nadar (swim), cavar (dig), and hacer (make).
¿Dónde está…? (Where Is…?)
Set up a pretend campsite and grab any camping and beach-themed toys and some stuffed animals for this fun game.
Hide items around the room and ask your child where each one is. They’ll need to practice their Spanish prepositions to answer. For example: “¿Dónde está el oso?” (Where is the bear?) “El oso está debajo de la mesa. (The bear is under the table.)
Mystery Beach Bag
Fill a beach bag with items you’d take to the beach: a towel, shovel, bucket, hat, etc.
Display corresponding vocabulary cards that your child can see as they feel inside the bag without looking.
Have them describe the item using Spanish adjectives if they can—for example, suave (soft), duro (hard), pesado (heavy). Then, they will guess the item before pulling it out of the bag.
The great thing about these activities is that they can be combined and modified in any way you want for your kids’ ages and levels. So try out a few and have some fun!
