An Introduction to LELU USA
STEAM stands for Science, Tech, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Ana believes that multidisciplinary learning through STEAM projects increases engagement and learning retention!
I found this to be absolutely true this month as we completed our first themed box with Lelu. Founded at Stanford University by Ana Leyva, this full language program for kids 3-11 years old is extremely hands-on and interactive!
Lelu is so much more than your standard Spanish curricula/class—it’s a full Spanish program. In each box, you’ll receive 4 core Spanish + STEAM activities. They are all related to the monthly theme and come with a calendar of daily resources to extend the learning from the core activities.
Each core activity is accompanied with instructional videos and all the materials you need- down the the glue sticks, crayons and tape! It’s amazing!
Live Classes for Gold & Platinum Programs
Although we just subscribed to the Silver program, there is an option to upgrade to Gold or Platinum to receive Zoom classes with a private tutor!
We have found through our experience with live zoom classes with TruFluency Kids, that they are totally worth the extra investment!
If you are serious about second language immersion, these classes help transition your kiddos from passive to active bilinguals!
This 1:1 time provides your kids individualized attention and support. For families in the Platinum program, every week also includes a community class where kids share with other Lelu families in all that they have learnt and created that week.

- Silver, Gold & Platinum plans: Monthly Spanish + STEAM subscription box (with at least 75 mins worth of activities for each week, accompanied with fun, online videos)
- Gold and Platinum plans: + 1-1 Spanish tutoring for 30 mins each week via Zoom
- Platinum Plans: + 30 min weekly community meeting in Spanish with peers via Zoom
Additional Spanish + STEAM Resources
If that wasn’t enough, Lelu goes above and beyond by providing all enrolled families (in any plan) with a parent’s Resource Page, an app where you can watch all the videos and track your progress. Plus a really active Facebook Group where all the Lelu families share photos from their learning.
I was really impressed that they also truly personalize each box! When you subscribe, you complete a quick survey, providing the names, ages and language levels of your kids.
We received personalized ‘gafas de sol’ with their names on them! As well as activities that were age appropriate.
Q&A with Founder Ana Leyva:
I LOVE hearing directly from the owners about the mission and vision of their product. So I asked Ana to take 5 to answer some questions for us!
1. Ana, can you give us a glimpse into your bilingual journey?
Spanish was my first language– I learned it at home from day one. I was born and raised in San Francisco so I was exposed to English, but I distinctly remember really learning English for the first time in Kindergarten!
Then I started learning French in high school (and studied it all the way through college) and started learning Arabic in college. I see myself on a journey with each of these languages as they’ve all added something special to my life!
2. I would love to hear about the mission and vision behind Lelu USA
When I became a mom and realized that teaching my kiddos Spanish would be an uphill battle, I was heartbroken. I couldn’t believe that was the case in modern day Los Angeles (where we were living at the time)!
My bilingualism was a treasure to me, one of the things I most valued about life, and I couldn’t imagine not raising my kiddos as bilinguals. My husband and I soon realized that one of the reasons it was so hard for bilingual families to maintain their bilingualism in the US was because there were so few resources. We couldn’t find the books, games, or activities we wanted in Spanish for our kiddos.
This journey set me on a course to go back to school to get equipped with what I needed to be the change I wanted to see. As a Masters student at Stanford, I was able to learn from the preeminent scholars in bilingual education and with their guidance create a program that truly fills a void so American kids can actually have a chance at thriving bilingualism!
Lelu’s mission is to make it possible for families to embrace and live out their bilingualism daily, in fun, relevant and memorable ways.
3. Who would benefit most from this resource?
Families say about us all the time “finally a Spanish program targeted towards older kids!” and “Yes, more advanced STEAM Spanish that pushes my kid beyond the basics they already know!”
We enroll kids 3-11, but hear from families all the time who are enrolled with younger kids and even from adults who have enrolled in our program. That’s because there really is something for everyone with Lelu.

5. Aside from your amazing monthly curriculum box, what are your top 5 favorite resources for raising bilingual children?
- We are obsessed with the amazing duo behind 123 Andrés (Andrés and Christina). In general our family is super musical. We make up songs all the time since we find it’s a super fun way to learn and practice language.
- I love resources like National Geographic en español
- Camaleón y las naturales ciencias is also a fave
- We’re also grateful for all the great translations on shows and movies on Disney+ and Netflix– whenever my kids have screen time, it’s in Spanish.
- Visual dictionaries of all sorts– we have both adult versions and kid versions we love!
