What is Semana Santa?
Semana Santa is one of the most important religious celebrations in Spain and Latin America, making it an excellent cultural topic for Spanish learners to explore.
This religious tradition takes place during the 8 days before Easter Day. It’s also known as la Semana Mayor and is the celebration of the passion of Christ.
Experiencing Semana Santa in Spain is a sombre but truly captivating experience.
If you’re lucky enough to experience it, you’ll see thousands of people on the streets watching the procession of huge floats. Decorated with religious statues of Jesus and the Virgin Mary and hundreds of flowers, the floats are carried by ‘costaleros’—usually men from the same church. They are followed by ‘nazarenos’ who carry crosses, torches or candles.
During Semana Santa, marching bands also play religious music and they start and finish at different churches across the city. It goes on day and night for the whole week.

Is Semana Santa celebrated in all Spanish-speaking countries?
Semana Santa is not only celebrated in Spain, but in many other Spanish-speaking countries. Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, and Colombia are also known for their elaborate processions during this holiday.
