In this post: The best books available on Amazon to support your bilingual and bicultural parenting.

Bilingual parenting takes grit, consistency, patience and courage. It’s a journey and often one that spans decades.

Ever since I began my own journey raising bilingual kids, I have immersed myself in bilingual parenting support books.

These authors and bilingual parenting experts have influenced our bilingual parenting strategy, mindset and motivation for raising bilingual kids in the United States.

Maximize your Child’s Bilingual Ability

I have read this from cover to cover twice now. It is full of highly tangible and practical tips for day-to-day bilingual parenting. From how to increase exposure, to maintaining healthy and realistic expectations, this is a very easy, yet impactful read.

I am so inspired by Adam’s story and you can read more about his OPOL (One Parent One Language) approach to raising bilingual kids in Japan in his guest post on Mama Llama Linguist.

Arroz con Pollo and Apple Pie

A wonderful book for families raising bicultural children. Written by Maritere Rodriguez Bellas, an extremely influential voice for Latino immigrant parents navigating two languages and cultures.

Mari was born and raised in Puerto Rico but raised her bilingual children in the United States. She has a wealth of knowledge and is a huge encouragement to me. I am blessed to call her a friend here in California.

Her book provides real talk and extremely helpful advice for parents struggling to balance two cultures, the emotional turmoil and tips for adapting and coping with the ‘American way’.

This book, by author Annika Bourgogne, provides plenty of practical tips as well as research based advice for raising bilingual children.

She focuses on the joy in the process and how to transition the child into an active bilingual. Her strategies are very tangible as she creates every-day examples for target language use.

Bilingual Success Stories Around the World

Another excellent title by Adam Beck. I love that this book features 26 families raising multilingual kids. It is an honest and authentic account of their bilingual parenting success stories.

The short stories within the book focus on the best strategies and methods for raising active bilingual kids.

I love how the tone is positive and celebrates the families who share their journeys, while also conveying the reality of the ups and downs along the way.

I highly recommend this title to keep you motivated, inspired and educated about the best proven practices for bilingual parenting.

The Whole Brain Child

Although not specifically linked to bilingualism, this is a must-read for new parents. I was gifted this book before my first child was even born, and I have dipped into it every year since.

It is truly eye-opening and helps you understand how your child’s brain is wired so you can better support their healthy development.

Fascinating for me was the “right and left brain” explanation, and my husband and I often now refer to the “lid flip” when our youngest is unable to self-regulate.

Understanding how my child’s brain works had a huge impact on my parenting tactics for coping with tantrums in particular.

Raising Bilingual – Biliterate Children in Monolingual Cultures

I just ordered this title. It was recommended by a fellow bilingual parenting mom in the USA. The part that really captured my attention was that the father essentially documented his children’s bilingual and bicultural journey using research tools over several years.

The family spent academic years in (highly English monolingual) Louisiana, and the summer months in (mostly French monolingual) Québec.

I’m excited to read it this month and update this blurb.

Are there any other bilingual parenting books I should read next? Feel free to leave a comment and let me know.
