Telling a joke in Spanish, ‘contar un chiste’, is a great way to help your kids learn the language while having fun!

Spanish jokes about animals seem to be the most popular with my kids. They are also easy to remember and memorable for younger children. This list shares some of our favorite animal related Spanish jokes.

Why teaching your kids Spanish jokes is good for them

Laughter is so good for the soul. In fact, studies show that laughter brings people closer.

But what if your family is non-native like mine, and you have to explain lots of jokes in Spanish? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of jokes? Can they still be funny?

I actually think that explaining jokes is good for them. It develops their vocabulary acquisition and exposes them to awesome, meatier concepts like puns, irony, play on words, etc.

Once they understand how the language works in the joke, and dissect the meaning, my kids still find the joke hilarious and want me to retell it over and over. It’s almost as if they have a sense of accomplishment by ‘getting it’.

Of course, I keep the jokes simple.

I recently came across ‘Un chiste por día’, which has one joke for every day of the year! The idea is that you find time each day to laugh together as a family. I just love that!

How do you say Joke in Spanish?

Before we jump into the Spanish jokes, there are a few different words that native Spanish speakers use for ‘joke’.

When I lived in Spain, the most common words for ‘joke’ were ‘un chiste’ or ‘una broma’.

They say ‘hacer un chiste‘ for telling a joke or ‘es una broma‘ after teasing you about something.

Other fun expressions are: ‘hazte el chistoso‘ and ‘Qué chistosito(a)‘ to describe someone who is telling a joke. Also ‘estar de broma’ to describe joking or messing around. It can often mean ‘a prank’ also.

Perhaps my favorite expression of all is ‘tomar el pelo’ which is the playful way to describe pulling someone’s leg. Although note how the expression is not a literal translation as it talks about hair instead of legs in Spanish!

In Mexico, they often say ‘payasear’ for joking around. (The noun ‘payaso’ means clown).

Other ways to say ‘joke’ in Spanish include: la burla, la chanza, el hazmerreír, la chirigota, la guasa.

Living in North County San Diego, my family often visits the Wild Animal Park. We pack a picnic and walk around for a few hours, stopping at each enclosure to learn about the animals inside.

As we find new animals, we talk about the Spanish names and learn fun facts about them. My kids love telling jokes about animals and I included the list below in the FREE Zoo Explorer Pack that you can download in the Freebie Library.
